SULAM@UMK: Geohazard Awareness Day

SULAM@UMK: Geohazard Awareness Day Strengthens Community Knowledge on Natural Hazards

Kota Bharu, 8 December 2025 – Universiti Malaysia Kelantan (UMK) successfully organised the SULAM@UMK: Geohazard Awareness Day at SK Tanjong Mas, Kota Bharu, involving students, teachers, and members of the local community. The programme was held from 8.00 am to 5.00 pm and centred on enhancing geohazard awareness through educational activities and practical demonstrations.

The event was conducted by geology lecturers and students from UMK, who introduced various aspects of natural hazards through demonstrations, simulations, and interactive learning sessions. These included landslide awareness, volcano demonstrations, flood education, tsunami simulations, land subsidence explanation, coastal hazard awareness as well as interactive booths and games.

Participants had the opportunity to engage directly with UMK facilitators, enabling a clearer understanding of geological processes and their potential impacts on communities. The hands-on nature of the programme successfully encouraged greater interest among school students towards geology and environmental disaster preparedness.

UMK also recorded its appreciation to the sponsors and collaborative partners who contributed educational materials, safety equipment, refreshments, tokens, prizes, and logistical assistance throughout the programme. Their support has significantly contributed to the success and outreach of the event.

This initiative demonstrates UMK’s continuous commitment towards community engagement and education, particularly in promoting disaster risk awareness and preparedness among the younger generation. UMK remains dedicated to organising similar outreach programmes in the future to foster public awareness and strengthen community resilience in the face of natural hazards.
